Pembroke man charged for early morning beating

A man and woman have appeared in Magistrate's Court charged in connection with an attack on Saturday morning that left a man unconscious in the street.

Frederick Anthony Swan, 26, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Damon Robinson with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Carlena Caines, 28, was charged as being an accessory after the fact. They appeared in court on Thursday.

The third man wanted in connection with the incident, Jermaine Simmons, left the Island on Saturday morning.

Swan, who was residing at Border Lane North, Pembroke, when arrested, is represented by Larry Mussenden. Caines, a mother of two, was represented by Peter Farge.

Mr. Robinson was found on Reid Street, unconscious and bleeding.

He was found by a member of the public at 5.15 a.m. on Saturday outside Joell's Alley, in Hamilton.

He is now stable in the Intensive Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Swan, a father, was remanded into custody while Caines, of Union Street, Pembroke, was released on $5,000 bail. They will reappear in court next week.

Lionfish Tournament postponed to August 30

Today's first Lionfish Tournament has been cancelled due to Hurricane Bill.

It will now take place the following Sunday August 30.

Organisers Matthew Strong and Selange Gitschner said: "We think the best course of action is to postpone the tournament to the following week.

"Even though Bill doesn't look like it will be as big a threat as previously predicted, most boats are not going to be in the water. The South Shore swells, visibility and boat access has swayed our decision to move the date."

The fishing tournament organised by environmental group Groundswell, was to take place at the Pier 41 Marina at Dockyard with 'jungle rules' on size of catch and numbers.

Lionfish are a growing menace in Bermuda, and have already decimated fish populations across the Caribbean.

To sign up for next week's tournament, visit Fantasea at Albouys Point, Hamilton, telephone 704-7413, or e-mail: matt@fantaseabermuda.com.

Alternatively visit the website: www.reefspect.com or check out the tournament's Facebook page.

Police report two burglaries on Wednesday

Two burglaries and one attempted theft took place in Smith's parish on Wednesday night.

Police report that a home on Holly Lane was broken into around 10 p.m. and a quantity of cash was taken.

Approximately 15 minutes later an unknown black male wearing dark coloured clothes was seen rummaging through a van parked on Jennings Road. The man was confronted by a home owner, but got away on foot empty-handed.

Around 11.30 p.m. that night a house on Jennings Road reported a break in, though nothing appeared to have been stolen.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact the St. George's Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222.

Man had box cutter at Cup Match

A St. George's man caught with a box cutter on Cup Match has been jailed for 12 months.

Kijon Baker, 25, of Mount Road, pleaded guilty to possessing the blade, using offensive words and violently resisting arrest on July 31 at St. George's Cricket Club.

The court heard that Police were on patrol in the area when they saw Baker shouting and screaming.

They approached him to stop the outburst when he told them: "If I had my n***s with me I would f*** you up. I am not afraid of you Police. I would take you all on one-on-one."

Baker allegedly pushed one of the officers in the back and a brief struggle ensued.

He continued waving his arms and legs around, but was eventually restrained and taken to the South Side Police Station, where he was searched and officers found a box cutter in the pocket of his pants. When asked, Baker told Police: "It's for people like you."

He was represented in court on Monday by defence lawyer Larry Scott who asked Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner for leniency when sentencing his client.

Mr. Scott said: "He simply had too much to drink over the holiday and much of his bravado was 'dutch courage'.

"This young man has embarrassed himself but I think his early plea of guilty shows his behaviour was inappropriate."

The Magistrate took all this into account, but said: "People like this defendant must be deterred from behaving in this way towards the Police".

He sentenced Baker to 30 days in prison for using offensive words, 60 days for violently resisting arrest and 12 months for possessing an offensive weapon; all to be served concurrently.

The Depot will be built on the South Side of Canal Street at the intersection with Laffan Street.

The construction will temporarily take over around 100 parking spaces, and cause the Farmer's Market to be moved into Bulls Head Car Park.

The Market will move to the forth floor of the car park except when there is bad weather, in which case it will occupy the third floor.
