Middle school students will get the chance to show off their artistic flair on large canvases in the city.

Developers of the former Waterloo House location, the Green family and Berco Ltd are offering the huge hoardings in front of the construction site as a canvas to create a public art mural.

The theme of the competition is "Bermuda, My Home" and the ten best sketches will be chosen. Students will also have the chance to win $8,000 in prizes for their schools. The competition is being organised through Masterworks Museum.

The details of the competition can be found at www.bermudamasterworks.com. Sketch submission deadline is Friday, March 26 with the young artists completing their work on site the week of April 12.

Motorcyclist suffers concussion in road crash

A 37-year-old received a suspected concussion after he lost control of his bike and collided with a wall on Sunday.

According to Police, the 37-year-old motorcyclist was travelling east on South Road around 10.45 p.m. A passing motorist found the Smith's parish man lying in the road. He was treated for a suspected concussion in hospital.

Four arrested on suspicion of impaired driving

Four people were arrested on suspicion of impaired driving over the weekend. According to Police, 12 burglaries were reported as well as 16 road traffic collisions. Five of the collisions resulted in injury. There were also five vehicles reported stolen.

Driver uninjured in heavy crash in St. David's

A car was extensively damaged after its driver lost control and drove it into a wall in St. George's Parish.

Police reported the single-vehicle accident took place around 7.10 p.m. Sunday near the junction of St. Luke's Lane with Texas Road on St. David's Island. The 23-year-old St. George's man lost control while driving east on Southside Road and hit a wall. He was not injured but the car had "extensive" front-end damage.

Three homes hit by burglars on Monday

Jewellery, computers and instruments were stolen from three homes at the western end of the Island this week.

The first incident was reported by a Forest Hill Drive, Warwick resident at 3.45 p.m. Monday, when a Nintendo Wii video game, a black electric guitar and a brown acoustic guitar were discovered missing.

Jewellery was taken from a Spice Hill Road, Warwick home between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. that day. Residents said the burglar entered while the home was unoccupied.

Police also reported a number of items taken from a Beaming Hill, Southampton residence during working hours. A quantity of cash and a quantity of jewellery as well as a Nintendo Wii video game system and five Wii games were stolen.

Public invited to anti-racism ceremony

Members of the public are being invited to a commemorative ceremony to honour the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The event takes place on March 19 at the Bermuda National Gallery, City Hall, Hamilton, from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. and is being organised by The Ministry of Culture and Social Rehabilitation and The Commission for Unity and Racial Equality.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually March 21. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people in Sharpeville, South Africa. The victims were peacefully protesting against the apartheid 'pass laws'.

Police issue road safety warning

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to drive and ride responsibly. Drivers are urged to use seat belts at all times and make sure children travelling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Riders are encouraged to always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

Between March 8 and 15 there were 11 reported injury collisions and 48 reported damage-only collisions. Eight arrests were made on suspicion of impaired driving and 12 vehicles reported stolen. According to Police, two vehicles each were taken from Hamilton Parish, St. George's and Warwick; three vehicles were stolen from Pembroke and one each from Smith's, Southampton and Sandys.

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 12 vehicles reported stolen, one was recovered.

Police Service reissues burglary warning

The Bermuda Police Service continues to warn residents to lock windows and doors before leaving home. Members of the public were advised to do so even if leaving the house unattended for a short period of time.

"We are reminding all residents to keep their valuables locked away and out of sight, ideally in a safe," a spokesperson said. "In addition, the serial numbers of all 'big ticket' items [such as jewellery and electronics] should be written down and secured in a safe or separate secure location; in the event any of these items are stolen and later recovered, the information can be used to identify them.

"Finally, residents should make sure all windows and doors are locked before leaving their homes unattended, even for short periods of time. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities or individuals in their neighbourhoods to Police on 295-0011."
