Pink slime is safe

Pink slime in the waters of Coral Beach is called coral spawn and will not harm anyone who swims there.

The Department of Conservation Services and the Parks Department within the Ministry of The Environment and Sports received a number of phone calls about the slime with a fishy odour in the ocean and on the beaches.

The coral usually spawns seven to eight days after the August full moon and will generally spawn for three days, although some species may spawn for longer.

While concerns have been raised that the substance is some form of pollution, it is actually naturally occurring coral spawn.

Members of the public are advised that the spawn is nothing to be concerned about and is actually a good sign as the coral reefs are reproducing and the spawn will go on to form new corals around the island.

Trucker moves road branch

A trucker has won praise for preventing major traffic delays by moving a huge branch from South Shore Road.

Richard Robinson and his team at Twist Trucking shifted the 20-foot chunk of poinciana tree which fell from a resident's garden and blocked the entire road, outside Demco Florist in Devonshire, yesterday afternoon.

Irene Mello and Rachel Smith, who work at the florist's, said most motorists were ignoring the problem, but Mr. Robinson stepped up to the plate.

"It just goes to show that there are some good Bermudians here," said Ms Mello.
