Yesterday Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney unveiled the first of four Fit Trails Government is going to install across the Island to give people easy access to a way to get exercise.

Mr. Blakeney said: "Bermuda has a very high rate of obesity which is costly to the Island both economically and socially. The Department of Sport was keen to purchase these Fit Trail systems to offer the public an opportunity to enhance their overall fitness, and also to encourage family and group usage.

"The Department approached the Department of Parks about installing the trails in various parks across the Island and Parks was happy to help out.

"This is a great initiative which combines the two main elements of this Ministry Environment and Sports, and I hope that these trails will cater to individuals and families already on the fitness path and to inspire those who also want to be on the path to health and wellness."

The first trail was unveiled yesterday at the Arboretum, in Devonshire, and three more will be set up at Shelly Bay field, Darrell's Island and Port's Island. They come as hundreds of people are taking part in the 100 Day Challenge and the Argus 400 Day Challenge both of which are designed to help people get fit.

Based on a US model, the Fit Trail is a "balanced programme of total fitness conditioning for all ages and sizes". There are 20 exercise stations placed along the trail where people can learn about exercise and perform an exercise routine on the apparatus at each of the stations.

The exercises are fully illustrated and people progress at their own pace. The routine has been designed to include exercises for flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength and muscle endurance.

An important element of the system is the Target Heart Rate Beat Guide located at stations throughout the system. The Guide provides valuable information about how people should pace themselves during any sports or exercise activity.

Mr. Blakeney added: "To everyone in Bermuda, get out into the great outdoors and start exercising today!"
