Brangman is no longer BHC boss

Major Glenn Brangman — the man tasked with helping the Guantánamo Bay Uighurs settle in Bermuda — is no longer general manager of the Bermuda Housing Corporation.

The former Regiment Quartermaster's contract was not renewed at the end of July after more than three years heading up the quango, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

A letter seen by this newspaper from BHC board chairman Charlton Dill, dated July 28, states: "Major Brangman is no longer on staff at the Bermuda Housing Corporation. His employment contract ended at July 31, 2009, and has not been renewed."

The 57-year-old was appointed a consultant to Government in December 2005 and given the job of reorganising the Island's three property quangos: BHC, the West End Development Corporation and the Bermuda Land Development Company.

In April 2006, he became acting general manager of BHC and was given the post on a permanent basis a year later.

Housing Minister David Burch was full of praise for "Q", as he is known, when he announced the appointment.

Senator Burch said a number of important projects had been completed under the Major's leadership, including moving the Canadian Hotel's homeless male residents to accommodation at Southside and rehousing the Club Med squatters.

In June this year, Major Brangman was asked to assist four former terror suspects from Guantánamo Bay, who were brought to the Island by Premier Ewart Brown and Sen. Burch.

He told the Associated Press he was helping reintroduce them to the world outside prison and had advised them: "One step at a time."

Asked why Major Brangman's contract was not renewed, Housing Ministry permanent secretary Derrick Binns said on Friday: "The terms of his employment are a matter for the board of the Bermuda Housing Corporation."

Yesterday evening, a spokesperson for the Board said: "It is an internal matter which has been addressed at the BHC Board level. At this stage there will be no further comment."

Deputy general manager Major Barrett Dill is now acting general manager of BHC, according to the quango's website.
