New Minister without Portfolio Michael Weeks yesterday called his post "a dream" that would allow him to focus on helping people.

The former youth worker said he felt "humbled, appreciative and very elated" to get the call from Premier Paula Cox.

He said the new role would allow him to do something meaningful.

Mr. Weeks was first elected as MP for Pembroke East Central last August, replacing the late Health Minister Nelson Bascome.

He has been a member of the Progressive Labour Party for more than 25 years and worked behind-the-scenes as a branch chairman before becoming an MP.

The 49-year-old said he felt things were now starting to fall in line.

"It's a dream because I have always been one for helping the people.

"And it has been a goal of mine that when I ran for political office I always wanted to be in Cabinet so I can do something meaningful.

"I think it is the best I could have it. It gives me the opportunity as a relatively young member I can learn about all the different ministries."

According to Mr. Weeks, he has a lot of skills to bring to the table having worked as a child worker and residential care officer for almost 20 years.

He said he would be most interested in working on "gang issues" and finding "solutions to gun crime plaguing young black males".

However he said he would be willing to test the waters in all ministries and is waiting to see which area the Premier assigns him first.

He told The Royal Gazette: "I am humbled I was picked by our new Premier to serve our Country because I can show my mettle, show what I am made of and that I am ready for the task.

"My family, they all said they knew I was going to get here some day and everyone is very supportive."

Mr. Weeks was one of 13 Cabinet Ministers unveiled by Premier Paula Cox yesterday morning.

He described it as a strong team "because of its diversity, its experience (and) its energy".

"I am looking forward to working with them," Mr. Weeks added.
