Ceremony for new Anglican Bishop takes place next week
Reverend Canon Dr. Patrick White will officially be officially installed as the new Anglican Bishop of Bermuda during a special ceremony next week.
The consecration will mark the second time a Bermudian has been chosen for the post.
The Rt. Reverend Bishop Ewan Ratteray retired in 2008 after 12 years' service. He holds the honour of being the first Bermudian and the first man of African descent to be elected.
Dr. White, who has served as rector of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Paget since 2005, was approved for the post by the Archbishop of Canterbury following an election last September.
Like his predecessor, Dr. White will be consecrated and installed at the Cathedral.
He and his wife Elizabeth have two daughters, Jennifer and Rebecca.
The Bishop-elect was ordained in the diocese of Toronto in 1977. He held a variety of overseas posts, the most recent as associate rector of St. John's, York Mills, Toronto.
Chief consecrator of the upcoming ceremony will be the Rt. Reverend John Richard Allen Llewellin, the Archbishop of Canterbury's personal representative, and head of staff at Lambeth Palace in London.
Dignitaries to attend the service include the Rt. Reverend Colin Johnson, Bishop of Toronto, the Rt. Reverend Philip Poole, Suffragan Bishop of Toronto, and Bishop Ratteray, who relocated to York, England, on retirement. Representatives from denominations across the Island have also been invited.
The service will take place Sunday, January 25 at 4 p.m. A reception will be held at the Pembroke Sunday School Hall immediately after.
