Charles to take ruling to members

teachers' dispute, Bermuda Union of Teachers general secretary Michael Charles will take the matter to members.

The written ruling was delivered last week Monday, but both the BUT and their lawyers were unclear on its meaning. It was hoped that arbitrator, Clevelyn Crichlow, would have clarified his decision at a meeting with BUT heads yesterday morning.

But following that meeting Mr. Charles said he was still not certain of the finding and that he would have to take the matter to the general membership.

"We will be meeting with the teachers on Tuesday,'' he said, "and I really cannot say anything further until we hear from them.'' Education Minister Milton Scott on Monday held that the arbitrator's decision was clear and was not in favour of the BUT.

Teachers are arguing that there is no provision in their collective bargaining agreement that allows time for them to do team planning, an integral part of the middle school concept.

Their agreement sets out that 25 hours a week should be devoted to actual classroom teaching while a further ten hours is to be devoted to other non direct teaching activities.

The issue has been in dispute for two years.
