City Hall encourages eligible voters and candidates to register before July election
The Corporation of Hamilton is calling on all eligible voters and prospective candidates to register ahead of the city elections on July 16.
City Hall has launched a "major voter drive", according to Corporation Secretary Ed Benevides, placing calls to all municipal taxpayers to ensure they register by Thursday, June 25.
Those thinking of running for Mayor, one of three alderman positions or one of five councillor roles can submit their paperwork from July 9 onwards.
Mr. Benevides stressed that qualifications for voters and candidates are the same: own or occupy a property or business within city limits, pay taxes and be over 18.
Each prospective candidate must have the backing of two voters one to nominate, and one to second. They also must pay $250 to the Corporation.
"A lot of people think you have to own a business or own a building to run, or have a specific qualification," he said. "You don't. You have to be a valid registered voter, with the backing of two people."
He said that thanks to City Hall's voter drive, there are already more registered voters than the estimated 459 that participated in the last election three years ago.
"I bet we have exceeded that already," he said. "We'll have an actual count once we close the register."
The Corporation of Hamilton is responsible for the administration and upkeep of the city, and operates several offshoot committees including Planning and Development, Parks and Finance, all chaired by an Alderman. The structure of the Corporation remains exactly as it was in 1795, with the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors all serving without pay. All the necessary forms for registration are available at the Corporation website at www.cityhall.bm.
Mr. Benevides advised all those with questions on their eligibility as either a city voter or candidate, to check the Corporation website for more information, or call the voter registration line at 292-1234.
