Clothing drive now needs volunteers to sort through bags for Haiti
Organisers have been overwhelmed by a clothing drive for the people of Haiti.
The community's response to the Style Bermuda/Capital G Bank fund-raiser this weekend was so enthusiastic, bags of clothing spilled over onto the sidewalk.
Those involved estimate more than 300 bags and boxes were handed in on Saturday, forcing them to seek additional storage space at the Berkeley Institute.
Volunteers are now being sought to help sort through the clothing this evening, ready for shipment to the earthquake-ravaged country.
Event coordinator and spokeswoman Antonia Mills said yesterday: "The response we received from the community was overwhelming. People were dropping off four or five bags of clothes at a time.
"We had three trucks in rotation to relieve the bags from piling up in the Capital G lobby. The initial storage space filled to capacity one hour into the drive and Berkeley Institute was then kind enough to lend us their storage space until Wednesday.
"Despite the rain, volunteers worked hard throughout the day. Bags were lined up along the sidewalk past the bank.
"We initially set up three stations up to sort through the bags as they came in, but the volume was so great that we just had to leave them and send them to Berkeley."
The community is now being asked to assist in sorting through the items at the Berkeley Institute today from 5.30 p.m.
The clothing drive included a fund-raising event at Capital G in Reid Street. This included live music, snacks and cocktails, plus giveaways, with donations to the Red Cross.
All the clothing items will be given to the Fashion Delivers Charitable Foundation, Inc., for distribution to the people of Haiti.
Meanwhile, Gilbert Institute Primary School parents also digged deep in their closets to help the children of the Caribbean island.
A drive-by and drop-off on Friday for 'Children Survivors of the Haiti Earthquake' brought another mountain of clothing and shoes for victims of the disaster.
These items will be placed in the Style Bermuda/Capital G-sponsored container, which is expected to be shipped to Haiti in the next few weeks. The shipping costs are being sponsored by Somers Isles Shipping Ltd.
