Concern as health staff lose use of lab

Health Minister Zane DeSilva clashed with his Shadow counterpart Louise Jackson after she complained Department of Health staff had been moved out of their laboratory.

On Friday Mrs Jackson told the House of Assembly they were forced out because their building on Point Finger Road is to be demolished but, because their new lab in Southside is not yet ready, some had to work from home.

During the Motion to Adjourn, she accused former Health Minister Walter Roban of bad planning and asked: "How in the world can you run a country when you don't have a lab?"

Mr DeSilva responded that sometimes things go wrong even if you've properly prepared — and accused Mrs Jackson of repeatedly putting out information without first checking it's correct.

He hit back at her criticism of Bermuda Hospital Board's failure to find a full-time oncologist, saying Government is diligently searching for one but had encountered problems due to a global shortage.

The Minister said Mrs Jackson had also wrongly implied patients at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital weren't being fed.
