Could middle schools be on the chopping block?

Education Minister El James

Middle schools are rumoured to be closing as early as September to make way for alternative schools.

It is also alleged that Education Minister El James is pushing for the closures and an announcement could be made next month.

In the House of Assembly on Monday, Mr. James said his Ministry is currently looking at middle schools and their performances.

"I have asked the principals at the middle and senior levels as well as the education officers to review the performance of our students as they transfer from primary to middle and then transfer again to senior school.

"We need to look at those transitions and the way that the middle schools operate and ask questions about what is best for our students. We also need to make sure our school structure matches up well with the new Cambridge Curriculum.

"Finally we have to be confident that our senior schools can offer the diversity of pathways to success that will match the needs and abilities of our diverse student population."

A source that spoke with this newspaper was confident a change was in the works.

"I can definitely tell you that that is one of the things that he [Mr. James] wants to do. I know on a personal note, he's looking to see that. It's a discussion happening among Cabinet. Whether or not Cabinet votes it, I am not sure. Everybody is wondering are we, are we not.

"I have talked to a few Cabinet persons and they're saying it's just a discussion. I think it's going to happen."

Mr. James has promised a five-year strategic plan which is scheduled to be released at the end of the month.

The plan will include improvements in infrastructure, curriculum and accountability. It is also expected to confirm any radical changes the education board may have decided on.

In January documents leaked to the public included possible closures of East End Primary, Prospect Primary, Gilbert Institute, Heron Bay Primary and Dalton E. Tucker Primary.

There was also discussion of shutting middle schools, extending primary school to P7 and adding a year to senior school.

A senior school that would specialise in performing arts, sports, or gifted and talented students was also an idea.

While Mr. James has stressed no primary schools would be closing in September, he has not confirmed or denied whether middle schools could close.

The Ministry of Education declined to comment yesterday.
