Crackdown coming for illegal airport parking

Airport managers will crack down on illegal parkers as they look at a string of measures to create revenue.

Minister Derrick Burgess told the House of Assembly yesterday that the Department of Airport Operations has a commercial development plan to maximise its income.

He said ideas include:

• leasing out the taxi lounge as a food and beverage outlet; and executive lounge;

• identifying new advertising revenue streams;

• providing wireless Internet access throughout the terminal;

• enhancing the dining experience for passengers by improving/providing new outdoor options;

• drastically decreasing parking violations by increased enforcement via the department's traffic officers.

Mr. Burgess, who was reading the department's brief in the Budget debate in the absence of Tourism Minister and Premier Ewart Brown.

He said the airport's advertising concessionaire, Rock Media, will carry out a refurbishment of the first class lounge.

"Rock Media is fulfilling the airport's aims to bring 'innovative and dynamic' advertising programmes to L.F. Wade International Airport," added the Minister.

"Not only is Rock Media generating additional revenue streams for the airport, they will also support airport goals and incorporate Bermuda's cultural media concepts. All signage, many using modern flat screen technology, will be tastefully created to add to the environment in which it is placed."

The Department of Airport Operations has been allocated an operating and maintenance budget of $20.8 million for 2010/11, virtually unchanged from last year.
