Cricket star charged with using stun-gun against love rival
National cricket star George O'Brien Jr. has been charged with attacking a love rival with a Taser stun-gun, causing him burns.
The famed fast bowler is accused of using the prohibited weapon against Tahir Shawki on April 28 in St. George's parish, resulting in grievous bodily harm.
The 24-year-old, of Sofar Drive, St. David's, pleaded not guilty when he appeared at Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Defence lawyer Kenville Savoury described the incident as related to "matters of the heart," and suggested that Mr. Shawki, 39, of Hamilton Parish, is unwilling to press the case further.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remarked: "Possession of a Taser in this time is definitely a serious offence."
O'Brien who has just returned from touring South Africa with the national squad and also plays for St. George's and the Police was granted $5,000 bail. He will stand trial on August 18.
National squad coach Gus Logie declined to comment on whether the court proceedings have led to any action against O'Brien, saying it was a matter for the Bermuda Cricket Board.
Board chief executive Neil Speight was unavailable for comment.
