Crime issue needs to be reappraised – UBP

Two Opposition MPs raised concerns about rising crime and how it is being tackled during a short Motion to Adjourn in the House of Assembly on Friday.

Opposition Chief Whip John Barritt said recent stories in the media about violent crime were a worry, as was a recent claim that the Island's prison system was giving inmates an easy ride and not enough support on their release.

"Perhaps it's time to reappraise, reassess what we are doing or not doing," he said.

Shadow Transport Minister Shawn Crockwell said Government's approach to tackling crime had been "a little schizophrenic" in recent years.

"They have not been consistent on their position on crime," he said. "We have been calling for a clampdown on law and order in the last two years."

Government backbencher Zane DeSilva said Cabinet had produced an excellent road map for dealing with the rise in youth violence but criticised The Royal Gazette for focusing on the suggestion of a SWAT team for the Island.
