Government yesterday gave $200,000 to programmes aimed at promoting the Island's cultural heritage. Culture Minister Neletha Butterfield presented cheques to 22 successful applicants as part of the Cultural Legacy Fund.

"The intent of this initiative is to show, through tangible means, Government's assistance for community endeavours which promote, maintain and celebrate our cultural heritage through artistic development, education and research," Ms Butterfield said.

"The Cultural Legacy Fund provides a significant boost to the development of a vibrant and diverse arts based community and this year it is truly reflected in the selection of those who have received an award."

The Cultural Legacy Fund was established in honour of Bermuda's 400th anniversary celebration last year. Successful applicants were involved in a range of art forms including dance, drama and music. Author Trudy Snaith received funding towards the development of her 'Bermudian Girl' book series. "Receiving this award feels very good indeed, and I'm looking forward to putting it to good use," she said.

Historian Colwyn Burchall also received funds in aid of a book for young readers chronicling the life and death of enslaved Bermudian Sally Bassett. Tonisha Key Holmes accepted the cheque on his behalf.

She said she hoped the award would go toward "a high interest visual representation for our community to relate to regarding our culture and history".

The cheques varied in their amounts.
