Divided loyalties make tomorrow's match difficult for one resident

Win Win: Dutch-born Nola Dean, who is Bermuda's Spanish Consul, will be cheering both teams in the World Cup finals tomorrow. The Netherlands will face off against Spain in the 3.30 p.m. match.

For most football fans, choosing either Spain or the Netherlands to cheer for in the World Cup final on Sunday is simple.

However that choice is much harder for Nola Dean.

While Mrs. Dean was born and raised in the Netherlands, she also happens to be the Island's Spanish consul.

"I'm Dutch by birth, and the Dutch are really big football supporters," she said. "I have spent most of my life outside of the country, but it is always nice to see the Dutch team do well.

"But Spain have been doing very well, and they have a very good football team.

"It's difficult to say who I want to win. I'm the diplomatic sort."

Mrs. Dean, who has been on the Island since 1975, said she has been avidly following this year's World Cup. While she's happy to see both Spain and Netherlands reach the final, she doesn't want either team to have to lose.

"I'd like them both to win, but that can't happen," she said. "I am glad to see exciting teams doing well.

"Some of the teams in the World Cup this year were not very fun to watch. It's refreshing to see two exciting teams make the finals.

"To be honest, I hope the team that is most entertaining wins."
