Driver charged with injuring UBP leader
An alleged drunk-driver was charged yesterday with injuring Opposition leader Kim Swan and his wife.
Jonathan Guishard, 40, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Ercinda Swan, known as Cindy, while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Mrs. Swan required hospital treatment after a van she and Mr. Swan were travelling in was in collision with a car on North Shore Road early on July 11, 2009.
Guishard, of North Shore Road in Pembroke, is also accused of causing actual bodily harm to Mr. Swan by reckless or dangerous driving, and to Lee-Ann Harvey, the occupant of another vehicle involved.
He is alleged to have been driving with excess alcohol at the time of the incident near Terceira's gas station.
Guishard, who appeared during the monthly arraignments session at Supreme Court, denies all the charges. Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves bailed him until an administrative hearing on March 1.
Also appearing yesterday was Andrew Blatchley, 58, of Charleston, South Carolina, who is charged with conspiring to import cannabis and money laundering. The cannabis charge alleges Blatchley conspired with persons not before the court, in Bermuda and elsewhere, between a date unknown and September 23, 2009.
The money laundering charge alleges Blatchley removed money from Bermuda between a date unknown and October 2, 2009. According to prosecutors, the money was the proceeds of criminal conduct, which he removed from Bermuda for the purpose of avoiding prosecution for a drug trafficking offence.
Blatchley pleaded not guilty and was remanded into custody pending an administrative hearing on March 1.
McLee Smith, 32, Gilroy Brangman, 36, and Diante Trim, 23, are charged in relation to an alleged fight at Fort Hamilton on November 8, 2009. A man is alleged to have suffered injuries to his arm and thumb and an abandoned car was found smashed into a wall nearby, according to Police reports at the time. Smith and Brangman, both from Sandys, are accused of wounding Andre Blackstock with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Smith alone is charged with having a bladed article a sword at Fort Hamilton and aggravated vehicle taking.
Trim, of St. George's, is accused of taking a motor vehicle without authority and using threatening words to Neseyah Jones: "Girl, I'm gonna beat your ass, my man is gonna kill your man". The trio deny the charges. They were bailed until their trial on June 7.
Herbert Dillas, 35, of Southampton, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Terry Robinson on November 2 last year. He pleaded not guilty and will stand trial on May 25. He was bailed until that date.
Also before the court was a 19-year-old man who is charged with two counts of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl aged over 14 but under 16. Neither he nor the alleged victim can be identified for legal reasons. The man pleaded not guilty and a trial date was fixed for May 17. He was bailed in the meantime.
