Driver who drank Elephant beers was impaired, gets ban

A Paget man was banned from driving all vehicles for a year after ignoring two stop signs and then failing a breath test.

David Correira, 56, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to driving while impaired.

Deputy Director of Prosecutions Michael McColm told the court that officers saw the Bostock Hill resident ignore two stop signs in Pembroke one on Mount Hill Road and a second at the bottom of Langton Hill.

Officers stopped Correira on St. John's Road and, while talking to him, noticed that his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed.

They asked him if he had been drinking, to which he responded: "I had a few beers. One or two Elephants."

A breath test showed Correira had 197 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, more than double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner banned Correira from driving all vehicles for a year, and fined him $1,000. He also issued him ten demerit points.
