Dunkley tables motion for committee on violence

United Bermuda Party Senate Leader Michael Dunkley has tabled a motion calling for a bipartisan committee to be set up to tackle gang violence.

Backing a concept put forward by Progressive Labour Party backbencher Randy Horton, Sen. Dunkley says the group should examine social factors behind recent gun warfare and recommend how it can be stopped.

The move, which has also received support from the Bermuda Democratic Alliance and PLP MPs, would involve MPs from all sides of the House meeting to draw on feedback from well-placed members of the community.

Sen. Dunkley's motion states: "That the Senate debates, and approves, the need to have the legislature appoint a joint select committee that will examine and explore the social causes for gang and gun violence in Bermuda and to recommend solutions that reach into the community and provide a more comprehensive programme that helps to restore safety and peace on the Island."

Mr. Horton could table his House of Assembly motion on the subject today.
