Early morning runner finds more glass bottles littering beach

Danger: Broken bottles and the remnants of a bonfire on Elbow Beach, which were photographed by Dalton Stovell who took an early morning run along the beach.

A Paget man on his morning run along Elbow Beach found the remains of a bonfire along with a dozen glass bottles.

Several people have complained to The Royal Gazette in the last few weeks after reportedly finding broken glass on the Island's beaches. The problem came into the spotlight after four-year-old Daente Burgess stepped on a shard of broken glass buried beneath the sand of Clearwater Beach. He received 25 stitches.

Since the incident, complaints have arisen about broken glass on several of the Island's beaches, including Tobacco Bay and Horseshoe Bay.

Dalton Stovell said last week that he was on his morning run when he saw a pair of women picking up bottles on the popular beach around 50 yards west of the beach's public entrance.

"I always go down there. It looks terrible. Untidy, dirty," he said. "It's all right having a little barbecue on the beach, but they're tearing off branches, starting bonfires. I like Warwick Long Bay, but you see the same thing up there.

"They need to charge people for this type of thing."

In the last month, the Parks Department has cautioned the public to properly dispose of glass and the remnants of bonfire, while reminding the public that it is illegal to drink alcohol in public.
