Electrical trainee's version of Eminem song lights up YouTube A million-hit wonder

YouTube wonder: Kieran Edwards, aka Abuik, is pictured on the baby grand piano in the Fairmont Hamilton Princess lobby where he entertained guests earlier this week.

When Kieran Edwards uploaded an instrumental piano cover of rapper Eminem's 'Love the Way You Lie' on YouTube he had no idea that it would take on a life all its own.

His cover received over a million hits in the space of two months.

As a result, he was officially recognised by YouTube as being its 95th most viewed musician of July 2010.

The 20-year-old is still shocked by the success of a song he says he practised, perfected and just uploaded.

He took his first piano lessons at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at age five.

He didn't much like the lessons at the time for him it was all about connecting with the ivories rather than learning the notes.

Today, things aren't much different. Mr. Edwards has a natural ear and still doesn't read music, a rare and innate talent.

However the Telford Electric employee hopes this will all change he has already begun teaching himself and aims to formally study music at university level.

Mr. Edwards said he was first asked to play Eminem's hit song with Bajan songstress Rihanna by a friend.

"So I sat down one night, played it. The next day I perfected it and I said let me upload it and see how it goes.

"When I first put it up there weren't so many views but then, day by day, it would be a few hundred and then it just kept moving.

"It's still moving now and it hit the million mark about a week ago.

"I couldn't believe it myself actually, it's incredible."

His rendition of 'Love the Way You Lie' can be seen on http://www.youtube.com/user/ABUIK#p/u under the moniker Abuik, pronounced A-bu-ka.

While a student at Sandys Middle School Mr. Edwards played the trumpet as a member of the Bermuda Middle School Band.

"I took lessons for one year when I was five and then I kind of drifted off and I started playing again seriously last summer," he said.

"I think back then, I didn't really enjoy it, because it was just reading notes. But now that I play by ear it is something that I love.

"I've been practising every day for hours and I can't get off the keyboard now."

Mr. Edwards said he'd received some professional attention, but recording executives had yet to come knocking.

"I've been getting a lot of requests to do a collaboration or [people asking if they can use my] music to record, but nothing really too serious."

Superstardom was far away, he added.

"I won't call it a YouTube celebrity yet, I'll be modest. But the amount of comments I received and the views, it just makes me want to keep at it and not displease anyone."

In his role as an electrical trainee at Telford Electric, Mr. Edwards assists with the delivery of materials and also with the layout of electrical planning.

"It is not really what I want to do in life, although I enjoy it, but music is my joy right now and I look forward to producing or teaching people how to play music and performing."
