Workers will remember fallen colleagues killed in workplace accidents next Wednesday.

Members of the public, employers, staff and the families of the deceased will assemble on the City Hall steps to mark the International Commemoration Day for the Dead and Injured Worker.

Health Minister Walter Roban and union representatives will also be present to observe the World Day for Safety and Health.

Since 1982, there have been 17 workplace-related fatalities in Bermuda. The Advisory Council for Safety and Health is encouraging the community to reflect for a few minutes on those killed or injured due to workplace accidents.

By law, employers and the self-employed must inform the Occupational Safety and Health Office of all work-related injuries.

They are also responsible for investigating accidents to determine the causes and corrective measures.

The Ministry of Health is also responsible for ensuring all workplaces comply with occupational safety and health legislation. Anyone seeking advice should contact the Occupational Safety and Health Office.

Employees are also responsible for ensuring their own safety at work by protecting themselves and not endangering others.
