Fahy denies Furbert called before UBP committee

Wayne Furbert

United Bermuda Party Chairman Michael Fahy has denied MP Wayne Furbert had been summoned for a disciplinary hearing.

Mr. Furbert said he had been asked to appear in front of the party's procedures committee.

He told The Royal Gazette: "They asked me and I refused because there were no grounds for me to appear. I am not a johnny-come-lately."

But Mr. Fahy said: "There was no call for him to appear before the procedures committee.

"I know what he seems to think but he is slightly confused. What was asked was to have a chat with some of us.

"He mistook that. It's all a storm in a tea cup. That was weeks ago."

In April Mr. Furbert, a former leader, withdrew from the UBP caucus and called for the party to disband to avoid more election defeats and a further hardening of the racial divide.

Mr. Furbert said he was now attending caucus occasionally although he did not attend a weekend summit of current and former UBP MPs at the Dinghy Club as the party looks for answers after suffering its three straight defeat.

A change committee is studying how the party can reverse its fortunes with a report due in the coming weeks.

Mr. Fahy described the meeting as very productive although some party insiders believed it was a vehicle to urge radical elements to stay loyal and not carry out a threat to split from the party.
