Five hospitality students granted scholarships
The next generation of Bermudian hospitality was praised yesterday, as five young people were awarded scholarships in that field.
Michiko Campbell, Joliza Vanderpool, David Thomas, Clesia Realejo and Tomika Easton received a combined total of $40,000 in scholarships during a ceremony on the Celebrity Summit.
Mr. Campbell, who graduated from Bermuda College this year, was awarded $15,000 to continue his study of cooking at Johnson & Wales University in Miami.
"It's the best thing," he said.
"I've always wanted to be a chef and own my own place."
Miss Vanderpool, who was awarded $10,000 to study cooking at Niagara College in Ontario, Canada, expects to graduate from CedarBridge Academy this year.
She said: "I'm really excited. I've been cooking since I was six.
"I've received so much encouragement from my family, my friends, my teachers and now this. Everyone's been so supportive."
Ms Easton was awarded $2,500 for her studies at Cape Breton University in Canada, Ms Realejo was given $5,000 for her studies at the London Metropolitan University and Mr. Thomas was awarded $7,500 to continue his education at Ball State University in Indiana.
Premier Ewart Brown said that the students would not only help keep the local tourism industry alive, but help it grow.
"I think you will see some significant growth, and you all will be a part of it," he said. "Stick to your commitment to hospitality, and good luck."
