Former BFS fire truck delivered to Anguilla

Government has been praised for donating a used fire and rescue vehicle to the Caribbean Island of Anguilla.

The fire truck, which arrived to Anguilla's Clayton Lloyd International Airport last Monday, replaced one that was severely damaged after overturning.

According to newspaper The Anguillian, Government also donated a container of firefighting equipment and sent two men to train their staff.

MP Walter Lister said there was a need for countries around the world to help each other and said the Island had a responsibility to lend a hand to its brothers and sisters.

"Bermuda has been blessed, but if you have a blessing and you don't pass it on, what (is) it worth.

"We are really an extension of each other. We are all Caribbean people and we welcome the opportunity to share with you," he said at the handover ceremony.

Infrastructure Minister for Anguilla, Evan Gumbs, said: "The fire truck is probably one of the greatest gifts to Anguilla at this time. Not only have you provided the truck, but also sent two men to train our firemen.

"That is a plus for us because we don't want to go back to the time when we were out of a fire truck and our airport had to be downgraded. It was a real challenge for us."

Meanwhile Anguilla's Chief Minister, Hubert Hughes, said the experience had taught him the importance of being neighbourly.

"We have not always been very neighbourly in our behaviour and in our utterances…

"Bermuda responded to our needs and I would like to ask the representative of the Government of Bermuda to take back to his wonderful country very high compliments and thanks for this great gift."
