Free movies on show at outdoor family festival

The Moonlight Movie series has partnered with the Bermuda Family Council to put on a film festival for families this weekend.

The festival will be held at the Arboretum on Friday and Saturday, with movies shown free of charge under the theme, 'Global Families, One Community'.

Eugene Dean, managing director of the production company behind the series, Startime, said: "All agencies that are involved in fostering healthy families, such as the Women's Resource Centre and PRIDE, will be there.

"We're encouraging families to come out. There will be dance groups, church choirs, Gombeys, the Cornerstone Puppets and a lot of other local entertainment."

Events start at 7 p.m. on Friday. The feature film 'Kung Fu Panda' will screen at 9 p.m.

Saturday's activities start at 3 p.m. 'The Ultimate Gift,' will screen at sundown.

The event hopes to reflect the various cultures here, Mr. Dean said.

"The entertainment reflects the different cultural groups here on the Island so we want the people to come out and reflect the different cultures too."

Mentioning the West Indian, North American, European, African and Asian communities now here, Mr. Dean added: "Bermuda is different from how it was 50 years ago. If we all are to co-exist then we must have an understanding and an appreciation for one another."

Startime's goal is to make the Bermuda Family Festival an annual event, or more than once a year if possible.

However, with the sour state of the economy, Startime has not received the same financial support that it has in previous years.

The Moonlight Movies series will continue through to Labour Day.
