Halfway house for women to open

A transitional home for ten women recovering from substance abuse will be opened on August 6 according to the Minister of Social Rehabilitation Dale Butler.

Minister Butler presented an update to the House of Assembly yesterday on the Substance Abuse Treatment Programme for women at the Women's Treatment Centre and the opening of the transitional housing.

Thanking the staff at the treatment centre, Minister Butler also announced the opening of the transitional home which will help women move from residential living to community living.

In the House of Assembly yesterday, he said: "I would like to commend Mrs. Angria Bassett, programme manager and Miss Sonia Paynter, clinical coordinator for their hard work and high standard of treatment.

"The Department for National Drug Control will open the transitional housing on August 6, 2008. This is the last phase of treatment for women in recovery prior to them entering aftercare.

"The transitional housing will accommodate up to 10 women who will be engaged in transition from residential to community living and seeking to rebuild their lives to be productive citizens."

Among other activities the women will be expected to participate in, include personal care, cooking, cleaning, working, budgeting and attending meetings and appointments that focus on their recovery.

Also planned this summer is a film on July 17 at the Liberty Theatre titled: 'Trafficking' for parents and teenagers to attend together, drug education sessions in the Government Summer Day Camps and Freddy: The drug-free frog will visit Harbour Nights once a month.

An implementation team is also working on mandatory treatment in the correctional facilities.
