Harvey wins Corporation seat unopposed
Bermuda Hotel Association CEO John Harvey has been voted in unopposed as Common Councillor to the Corporation of Hamilton.
Mr. Harvey was the only candidate to submit nomination papers and thus won the seat by acclamation from his colleagues on Tuesday.
Mayor Sutherland Madeiros said: "On behalf of the Members of the Corporation of Hamilton I am pleased to welcome Mr. Harvey to the Corporation.
"He has worked in the tourism industry for many years and his experience in this area will be an asset to the Corporation."
In addition to heading the Bermuda Hotel Association Mr. Harvey is CEO of the Hotel Employers of Bermuda, a member of the Labour Advisory Council and the Bermuda Airline Strategy Committee.
Mr. Harvey had sought election in July when three spots were up for grabs but narrowly lost to third-placed candidate Anne Kast when Glen Smith and Charles Gosling were also elected.
But he has now got a spot after Pamela Ferreira moved up to Alderman following the resignation of Bill Black.
During his campaign, Mr. Harvey, who is a former policeman, said the Corporation had lost its focus amid a "general sense of disharmony" and said he wanted to see changes to the electoral process and an improvement in the look of the capital.
Fellow Common Councillor Charles Gosling welcomed the arrival of Mr. Harvey having worked with him on a number of projects.
He said: "He's one who always looks for a solution and who would seem more opportunities-based rather than problems-based. He will be a great addition."
The Corporation, which has a $20 million-plus budget, has been rocked with controversy this year after losing three Councillors and an Alderman for various reasons over the space of five months, as well as a number of senior staff.
