Honeymooner caught with drugs at airport tells court that he 'screwed up'

A Philadelphia man told Magistrates' Court that he "screwed up" by bringing marijuana to Bermuda on his honeymoon.

Alexander Catalano, 35, pleaded guilty to importing almost five grams of cannabis on a flight to the Island from New Jersey.

Crown counsel Robert Welling said Catalano arrived at L.F. Wade International Airport around 11 a.m. on August 12.

Customs officers randomly selected him for a secondary search. He then appeared to become physically ill, vomiting into an airsick bag, but refused medical treatment.

Officers opened his bag. Underneath a plastic bag containing clothes they found a cloth bag that smelled like burned cannabis.

Inside, they found a pipe, a cigarette lighter and a bottle.

Asked about the items, he said: "My bachelor party was last night and we went to a Jimmy Buffet concert. I didn't bring anything here."

As the officers continued their search, they found a suspicious looking Old Spice spray bottle.

The officers were able to remove the bottom of the bottle, and inside they found a bag of plant material.

Lab tests revealed the material to be 4.73 grams of cannabis.

Yesterday Catalano pleaded guilty to importing the drugs, saying: "I screwed up. To come here on my honeymoon... I screwed up."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,500, to be paid immediately.
