Identifying the myths about mental health

Spotlight: A week of identify myths and social stigmas associated with mental health is part of an awareness campaign underway at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute.

The Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI) has launched a campaign to identify myths about mental health as part of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Awareness Week.

MWI hopes BUST IT will raise awareness among adolescents about stigmas associated with mental illness.

The campaign also coincides with Child and Adolescent Services' (CAS) second anniversary in its new home at MWI. The facility offers a day programme for as many as ten students and a four-bed unit for people who need in-hospital care.

"During the past two years, we have seen an increase in referrals from the private sector," said CAS director Sharon Apopa. "We are pleased the public has been supportive of our services and we have chosen the BUST IT campaign to further educate the community about myths and stereotypes surrounding young people and mental illness."

The week's activities include student tours of the facility. Faculty members will also visit Whitney Middle School and Elliott School to talk to students about mental health. School counselors are also invited to a presentation at MWI on depression in children and adolescents.

"We know young people with mental health needs thrive when they have the right support and the right services," continued Mrs. Apopa. "Through education, like the BUST IT campaign, we are changing families' lives and improving outcomes for young people in our community who face mental health challenges."
