A Devonshire man was banned from the road after he led Police on a chase through Hamilton.

Carlton Mowatt, 23, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to driving while impaired and failing to stop at a red light.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said Police were outside Spring Garden Restaurant & Bar around 3.10 a.m. on July 16 when they saw Mowatt walking unsteadily towards a bike.

Mowatt dropped the vehicle, picked it up, put it back on its stand, and went to start the vehicle.

Police approached him but he got on it and rode east on Church Street.

Police chased Mowatt as he drove through a red light at the intersection of Church Street and Burnaby Street, and around several city blocks before he lost control of the bike near the City Hall car park.

Mowatt attempted to run away but was stopped by the officers.

A breath sample found Mowatt had 164 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

He told the court: "I feel sorry for what happened. It was a bad mistake."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Mowatt $1,000 and banned him from driving all vehicles for one year.

He also fined Mowatt $100 and gave him three demerit points for disregarding a traffic sign.
