A 33-year-old Irishman became Bermuda's tenth road fatality of 2009 during the Cup Match weekend.

James Quinn, who worked at Deloitte, suffered serious head injuries after crashing his motorcycle on Crow Lane in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said Mr. Quinn, of Warwick, lost control of his bike and collided with a traffic light pole as he was travelling east near the junction of Crow Lane and Corkscrew Hill in Paget at about 1.50 a.m. No other vehicles were involved.

He was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 2.15 a.m.

A colleague of Mr. Quinn, who asked not to be named, described him last night as a "lovely guy".

She said he was single and had recently sat his final exams to become a qualified actuary. "He was a really nice guy and very friendly."

Staff at Deloitte were told of Mr. Quinn's death in an e-mail sent by the company's human capital manager Katherine Cupidore on Saturday morning.

She wrote: "On behalf of the partners, it is with great regret that we report the death of James Quinn in a traffic accident on Saturday, August 1. We extend our sympathy to and ask you to think of James's family, friends and colleagues."

Ms Cupidore told The Royal Gazette yesterday: "Out of respect for the family and friends of James we will not be issuing a statement."

She added: "We ask that you don't reach out to James's family, friends or colleagues during this time of grieving."

The area of Crow Lane where the crash happened is known as an accident blackspot. In February 2005, a 38-year-old Canadian tourist on a rental cycle was killed when he tried to negotiate a right-hand bend near the junction with Corkscrew Hill.

Two months later, a 26-year-old Irish guest worker died after losing control of his rental bike and crashing into a wall.

This newspaper has reported a series of crashes there in recent years, involving severe injuries to motorcyclists.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said yesterday: "There have been several serious injury collisions and fatal collisions in that particular area.

"Inquiries into this matter are ongoing. The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."

Witnesses or anyone with information about Saturday's crash should call P.c. Mervin Homer on 295-0011.
