Island's national service idea may be shared at Egypt event

Pyramids in Egypt: Bermuda could attend a conference in the country later this year.

Bermuda could attend a conference in Egypt in October to share its plan for a voluntary national service programme.

Premier Ewart Brown told the House of Assembly on Monday that going to the annual International National Youth Programme event in Alexandria would give Government the chance to learn from other policymakers, researchers and practitioners from around the world.

A national service programme was promised in last year's Throne Speech and Dr. Brown fleshed out the details in a speech in Parliament last month.

He said the plan was designed for men and women aged between 24 and 30 and volunteers would complete 16 hours service a month for two years to receive possible incentives such as better loan rates and reduced TCD fees.

Dr. Brown said on Monday that the public had until the end of this month to give feedback on the programme.

"The plan has also been shared with the people of India," he said, in apparent reference to his recent trip there. He said it was featured in the February 8, 2010 edition of the Overseas Territory Review.

The Premier said the programme of "positive and meaningful activities" was aimed at helping Bermuda "return to the values which we once demonstrated in abundance".

"It is envisioned that as a result of this interaction, younger Bermudians will make informed career choices as they develop and enhance those skills required to make them undeniable assets to a broad range of employers."
