KBB clean-up collects almost 2,000lbs of trash
A charity dedicated to keeping the Island clean picked up the equivalent weight in trash of an entire football team in their biggest single clean-up in three years.
Twenty-five Keep Bermuda Beautiful volunteers aged from 12 to 75 collected 57 bags of trash and 51 bags of recyclables from Devon Springs Road and Devon Springs Lane last Saturday.
KBB president Susan Harvey said: "There was a really good mix of people out there. We all worked really hard. It's amazing what a group of dedicated people can do in a short time."
Sorting resulted in an estimated total of 12,000 items picked up, meaning that each individual volunteer collected an average of 480 pieces of trash.
The total weight came to 1,905 lbs, not including bulky waste.
The trash was collected from a relatively short stretch of road and was not the result of dumping household waste, but rather long-term, consistent dropping of individual pieces of rubbish.
"When we got into the bushes, it was really atrocious," Mrs. Harvey said. "There was so much trash in a small area. We need to get the message across that it is important not to drop litter."
In a bid to stem the flow of trash from one source people who throw litter from vehicles KBB has been making car litter bags available for free at gas stations, and will do so again in the future.
They also encourage members of the public to come out and get involved in upcoming initiatives.
Residents are invited to show their love for Bermuda in a meaningful way on Valentine's Day, by helping to clean up the Railway Trail opposite Shelly Bay MarketPlace. The meeting time for this clean-up is 9 a.m.
And people interested in exercising while helping the environment can join the Walk and Work on April 18 which is part of the 100 Day/End-to-End programme.
Registered walkers will start from King's Square, St. George's at 2 p.m. and walk to Ferry Reach, continuing along the Railway Trail to the turnaround where walkers will have the option of a ride or a walk back to town. There will be opportunities along the way both to drop off full bags and pick up fresh ones.
