KEMH physios launch Move for Health info sessions
Physiotherapists at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital are hosting information sessions next week in a bid to get people walking, jumping and dancing their way to better health.
The campaign, 'Move for Health', part of a worldwide effort to mark Physiotherapy Week, encourages people to participate in regular exercise and increase levels of physical activity. Starting on Tuesday, and ending on Friday, hospital physiotherapists will be in the lobby for two hours each day, providing people with information on physical activity.
They will also demonstrate the proper way to set up a work station to prevent strain on the eyes, neck and back.
According to KEMH Physiotherapist Antoinette Haynes, physical exercise is key in preventing some illnesses and adults should be doing 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, five times a week; while children should be getting about an hour each day.
Such activity can be broken down into smaller chunks and can include simple things such as walking at a brisker pace or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Ms Haynes said: "Just being a little more active throughout the day benefits your health and can prevent or help manage medical conditions such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, and depression."
Judy Fletcher, KEMH Physiotherapist, believes people can find easy ways to stay active in their busy lives; and suggests activities like joining in with their children in playing games or taking up a hobby such as gardening. She said: "It's easy to be active, if you think about ways to have fun instead of viewing it as a chore. "With a bit of resourcefulness, people can increase their level of physical activity. Our bodies were made to move."
Angela Hayward, Clinical Supervisor for the Physiotherapy Department says the department is pleased to participate in the campaign; and added: "Promoting good health and well-being through safe physical activity is a priority for our department."
The campaign will be running in the lobby of KEMH on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. and noon; and on Thursday and Friday from noon to 2 p.m.
