John Ferreira, 41, was still in hospital last night with severe swelling after the incident at Whale Bay Laundry in Southampton on Monday.

Both doctors are understood to believe his arm will not suffer any lasting damage.

Four firefighters had to use a crowbar to prise Mr. Ferreira's arm from the machine.

Mr. Ferreira, who has worked for the firm for 18 years, was oiling a mangle drum when his hand was pulled into the mangle.

Laundromat manager Angelina DeMoura said: "We are hoping he will be OK and thankfully it's not as bad as it could have been.

"He's suffered some bad swelling from the elbow down and it's certainly bad enough.

"But I talked to the nurse this morning and it doesn't look like it's going to get any worse. We're very relieved.'' Dennis Webster Warner showed no reaction as Mr. King sentenced him to 140 days for failing to pay a $1,050 fine stemming from convictions for possession of cannabis and two assaults on Policemen.

Warner, 34, of Wreck View Hill, was supposed to have paid the fines -- set in December, 1996 -- by April 4 last year.

Warner must also serve 54 days for failing to pay $600 of a $900 fine from a December, 1997 conviction for possession of cocaine.

Mr. King told Warner: "Since you cannot pay Stuart's and Smith's at the same time with the same cheque, one of these sentences will be served consecutively.'' He told Warner that if he could pay the $1,650 balance he would be released from prison. "Time is money,'' Mr. King added.

SENTENCIN DELAYED CTS Sentencing delayed A Hamilton Parish man who broke into his former wife's home, threatened to kill her and caused $5,000 worth of damage to her property will have to wait until today to find out if he is to go to jail.

Denis James Davis, of Limehouse Lane, was to be sentenced in Magistrates' Court yesterday afternoon after earlier pleading guilty to the offences, which were committed in February.

But at the beginning of the afternoon session, Davis' lawyer, Juan Wolffe, asked for the case to be temporarily adjourned while he dealt with another matter in another court.

When Mr. Wolffe had not returned an hour later, Magistrate Arthur Hodgson decided to adjourn the case until this morning.

SPEEDER FINED $500 CTS Speeder fined $500 Driving at twice the speed limit cost a Devonshire man $500 yesterday.

Winston York, 36, of Devon Springs Road, admitted in Magistrates' Court to driving at 84 kph on Parsons Road last October.

Magistrate Arthur Hodgson also disqualified York from riding motorcycles for three years.

MAN FINED FOR DRUGS CTS Man fined for drugs Possessing drugs near a nursery school cost a 28-year-old Pembroke man $1,150.

Dandre Leach, of Union Street, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to possessing cocaine on April 16.

Crown Counsel Caitlin Garland said Leach was on Elliott Street when he was stopped by Police officers and searched.

A brown paper twist containing 0.05 grams of cocaine was found in his pants pocket.

Leach was within 100 metres of the Little Lambs Nursery School, an increased penalty zone, when the offence occurred.
