Make boundaries report a priority, urges UBP

Government needs to make tabling the Electoral Boundaries Commission Report a priority, according to Senator Jeanne Atherden.

Mrs. Atherden, the UBP Chairman, said tabling and passing the report should be treated with urgency as it ensures a fairer election, should one be called.

"The tabling and passage of the report would signal that the two parties can indeed work together in the national interest — surely something most Bermudians would like to see."

The report, which sets out new electoral boundaries, was completed in February and tabled by the Speaker of the House in May, but was not brought forward for debate before the summer recess.

Opposition MPs expressed concern that any election called before the House debated it would be held under the existing boundaries, giving some MP's a better chance of regaining their seats.

Sen. Atherden said: "The report is the culmination of a constructive bipartisan effort by the PLP and the UBP, chaired by Billie Miller of Barbados.

"We consider this to be a matter of urgency and principle given the all-party commitment to the fairest possible reflection of the people's will in the event of an election."
