Man admits injuring Opposition Leader and his wife in road crash

An alleged drunk driver pleaded guilty yesterday to injuring Opposition Leader Kim Swan and his wife.

Jonathan Guishard, 40, admitted he caused grievous bodily harm to Ercinda Swan, known as Cindy, and actual bodily harm to Mr. Swan in yesterday's Supreme Court arraignment session.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke requested that two other charges of driving drunk and causing actual bodily harm to Lee-Ann Harvey, the occupant of another car involved, remain on Guishard's file. The charges will not be pursued at this time.

Mrs. Swan received hospital treatment after the van she and Mr. Swan were travelling in collided with a car on North Shore Road near Terceira's Shell Service Station early on July 11, 2009.

Guishard, of North Shore Road in Pembroke, appeared during the monthly arraignments session at Supreme Court. Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves allowed Guishard continued bail and ordered him to surrender his travel documents.

Mr. Justice Greaves also ordered Bermuda Assessment and Referral Centre and Social Inquiry reports.

Mr. Swan said later: "My concern is I was not involved in this accident alone. Me and my wife were not alone.

"There were other persons affected by this accident so we are thankful for our lives but I was concerned about that person that was affected as well."

Guishard will appear in the next arraignment session on April 1.

Peter Sagos, 35, of Ottawa, Canada also appeared in yesterday's arraignments session. He pleaded not guilty to conspiring to import into the Island the controlled drug cannabis.

He also pleaded not guilty to possession of the proceeds of crime and conspiring with another to retain the proceeds of crime.

Sagos was remanded in custody. His case will be mentioned in the next arraignment session on April 1. A trial date of July 12 was set.

Frederick Swann, 27, who was found guilty for his role in the beating of Damon Robinson will be sentenced on March 25.

Kenneth Thompson Sr., 50, Kenneth Thompson, Jr., 23, and Troy Govia, 48, pleaded not guilty to possession of 262.97 grams of cannabis.

The Sandys residents also denied being in possession of 544 grams of cannabis with intent to supply.

Thompson Sr. and Thompson Jr. also pleaded not guilty to possessing drug equipment. The trio will be mentioned in the next arraignment session on April 1.
