Man fined $175 for damaging cell door

A Hamilton Parish man who kicked in the door of a holding cell was ordered to pay $175 towards its repair.

Stacey Simpson, 24, of Cottage Road West, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to causing wilful damage to property.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court that on August 8 Simpson was in a cell at Southside Police Station when officers on duty heard a loud, repeated banging noise.

They looked inside the cell and saw Simpson kicking the metal door.

Police warned him to stop, but minutes later the banging resumed. When they entered the cell, they noticed a metal sheet had become dislodged.

Simpson told the officers: "I didn't do that."

Yesterday Simpson admitted the offence and apologised. Despite being unemployed, he offered to pay the $175 needed to repair the door.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered that he pay the money before the end of the day, or face imprisonment.
