Man had cannabis near cricket club

A 26-year-old man found with cannabis near an abandoned building has been fined $2,500 for the offence.

Sergio Adderley pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court last week to possessing 1.16 grams of cannabis in an increased penalty zone.

The Sandys resident was within 100 metres of the Somerset Cricket Club at the time.

Crown counsel Nicole Smith said two Police officers were approaching Adderley on another matter on Somerset Road when he threw an object away and began walking away.

Adderley was stopped and the material, which was later found to be the cannabis, was recovered by the officers.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 for possessing the cannabis and an additional $1,500 for having it in an increased penalty zone.
