Man used brother's name in bid to escape justice
A man who tried to escape a drug possession charge by giving Police his brother's name was fined more than $5,000 when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.
Ricardo Brangman, 30, was stopped by Police on November 8 last year after they saw him riding a motorcycle at high speed near Sandys Beach National Park. Smelling cannabis, Police searched Brangman and found a plastic twist containing plant material in his pocket.
A lab test later revealed the plant material was 1.64 grams of cannabis and 0.3 grams of cannabis resin.
Brangman was taken to the Hamilton Police station, where he told officers that he was Derrick Brangman, his younger brother.
Police later released Brangman on bail, only learning that he had given a false name after he failed to answer his bail.
In court, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Brangman $1,000 for each possession charge and added $1,500 to each offence for possessing drugs in an increased penalty zone. Brangman was also fined $500 for giving police a false name.
While Brangman asked for additional time for pay, Mr Warner ordered for the full $5,500 to be paid immediately.
"From the outset you attempted to avoid prosecution," Mr Warner said. "You were bailed and you refused to answer bail. You are only here because you were arrested. You will pay forthwith or you will be imprisoned for three months."
