Mediation proves successful between CedarBridge board and disgruntled managers
The remaining members of the CedarBridge Academy board have resolved their differences with disgruntled managers at the school.
The two parties have spent the past few months entangled in court proceedings after three managers were sacked. Education Minister El James said yesterday that mediation had helped the parties through their differences.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board, the managers, and the Bermuda Public Services Union for sitting down around the table with the mediator and hammering out an agreement which brings to a close the dispute between the board and the managers," he said.
The managers had refused to sign controversial contracts saying they could be fired at any time.
Information technology manager Bussie Ible was fired May 3 hours after a court order was granted preventing the board from dismissing any of the school's managers. Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts manager Emilygail Dill and controller Ivan Broadbelt were let go later.
The board was then forced to withdraw the letters of termination to escape being in contempt of court. A press statement issued yesterday said the details of the agreement are confidential but described the resolution as "equitable and in the best interest of all parties".
Mr. James fired CedarBridge board chairman George Scott and deputy chairman Lovitta Foggo just over a week ago. The remaining executive members of the board then resigned in protest.
A statement issued in "defence of [their] professional reputations" listed close to 14 challenges they faced. These included the alleged interference and the "micromanagement" of the running of the school by Mr. James through his permanent secretary, Kevin Monkman.
