More drugs are being seized by Police
Police have seized $1.7 million in drugs in the first three months of 2010, a 114 percent increase compared to last year.
The seizures have resulted in 35 kilograms of drugs being taken off Bermuda's streets, most of it being cannabis.
Most of the seizures happened on the street, although three happened overseas and 15 happened at Bermuda's port.
In total 23 kg of cannabis was seized while 1.5 kg of cocaine was seized; only 2.7 grams of heroin were seized in the first quarter.
Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva said: "Drug enforcement activity has increased considerably in the last quarter and is part of an overall upward trend where there has been a continual increase for the last five quarters.
"The first quarter of 2010 is exceptional as it is not only the highest figure for the last five years, but is also statistically significant.
"The average for drug enforcement activity over the last five years has been 117 seizures per quarter and is now at 199 for first quarter of 2010, emphasising that the last five quarters has shown a continued improvement in BPS activity in relation to progressing its drugs strategy."
