MPs clash on national health plan development
Opposition MP Grant Gibbons was denied in his attempts to squeeze information about a proposed national health plan out of Health Minister Zane DeSilva.
In a Ministerial Statement on Friday, Mr DeSilva told the House of Assembly the recent Health Financing Summit had discussed the development of the plan, which aims to ensure everyone gets access to basic health care.
During the following parliamentary question time, Dr Gibbons asked the Minister how he would move forward with the plan. Mr DeSilva replied: “We will move forward expeditiously and patiently.”
Dr Gibbons said: “Does the Minister have a plan and will he share that with this House?”
Mr DeSilva responded: “Yes we do, Mr Speaker.”
Dr Gibbons said: “What is the plan that the Minister referred to?”
Mr DeSilva assured the former United Bermuda Party leader the plan would be revealed in “a very short time”.
Dr Gibbons also got no answer when he asked Attorney General Michael Scott how many suspicious activity reports Bermuda had received in the past five years, after Mr Scott had spoken about anti-terrorism legislation.
The AG said details surrounding the reports must be kept confidential, but indicated the actual number of them would eventually be officially released.
