People visiting Level nightclub last Saturday night may have thought they were gatecrashing a Tom Selleck convention.

The 'Magnum' star himself would doubtless have been impressed with the facial hair on show at the 'Movember' moustache-growing contest awards night — and even more impressed with the estimated $25,000 it raised for good causes.

Competitors were sponsored to grow as big a moustache as possible throughout November, with cash going to men's health charities across the world.

Prizes were handed out at a ceremony in Level to mark the end of the month.

The 'Best in Mo' award for the man with the finest moustache went to Joe Miceli, who compensated for his bald head with a remarkable handlebar moustache, while a 'Miss Movember' pink sash was handed to Jamie Webb for his wispy effort.

'Man of Movember' was Joe DeSilviera who raised $3,725.

One of the organisers, Keenan Press, said: "It was like a Tom Selleck convention was being held at Level nightclub.

"I think a lot of us made our fathers proud. I know that my father used to sport a ridiculous handlebar moustache similar to the one that I attempted to grow.

"Despite the paranoia it caused me, I'll always miss my moustache – until next Movember, when we are reunited.

"Thanks to all the brave men who grew/attempted to grow a Mo for charity. Somewhere in Hawaii, Tom Selleck is smiling."
