No changes to Island's breast cancer screening policy – Chief Medical Officer

Despite new cancer screening guidelines in the US, Bermuda's Chief Medical Officer said there have been no changes in local guidelines.

Last week, the US Preventive Services Task Force announced changes to its recommended breast cancer screenings guidelines, pushing back recommended screenings until age 50 instead of 40.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also recommended pushing back cervical cancer screenings until age 21, and screening less often.

Bermuda's Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Cann said on Saturday that there have been no changes to local guidelines.

"A number of governmental organisations, heath authorities and professional organisations issue cancer screening guidelines.

"All major authorities agree that early detection of cancer is critically important in reducing the number of deaths from cancer in women.

"All women should consult with their physician before considering any change to their screening programme."

Dr. Cann said that until there is more evidence to support a change in guidelines, the local medical community should continue to follow established recommendations.
