No delays after airport false alarm

A fire alarm caused the L.F. Wade International airport to be evacuated yesterday morning — but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Airport General Manager Aaron Adderley said the warning sounded at 9.35 a.m. leading all passengers and staff to be asked to leave the terminal. The Fire Service arrived around ten minutes later.

After checking an office on the second floor from where the alarm was activated, fire officials determined the building was safe and the all-clear was given shortly after 10 a.m.

"Passengers who had been evacuated from the check-in and US Departures areas were permitted back into the building with US Customs and Border Protection personnel allowing those who had already been through the screening process to re-clear Customs and security first, followed by those who had not yet been processed prior to the alarm sounding," said Mr. Adderley.

"The evacuation and subsequent re-entry to the building by both passengers and airport employees went rather expeditiously, resulting in there being no delays for departing flights.

The exact cause of the alarm is at this moment under review."
