Parents are being urged to attend a key meeting to discuss plans for Bermuda's first Discipline Code for schools.
The April 18 meeting is being organised by the Bermuda National Parent Teacher Association.
It will be held at the Peace Lutheran Church on South Shore Road, Paget, starting at 7.30 p.m.
And there are plans for two speakers to be there -- one of them a school principal.
It is hoped they will inform parents about the planned code.
A draft code for primary and secondary schools was recently released by Education Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira.
It was drawn up by a principals' committee, with Ms Esme Williams from Southampton Glebe Primary as chairman. Members are Ms Pat Holder, Warwick Secondary; Ms Eunice Jones, Woodlands School; Mr. Warren Jones, Northlands Secondary; Mr. Llewelyn Smith, West End Primary; and Ms Ann Charlotte Ming, Harrington Sound Sound Primary.
The draft code states pupils who use or sell drugs will be reported to Police -- and could face expulsion.
And it suggests principals may recommend that drug users seek rehabilitation.
On violence, it says incidents will be reported to parents and possibly Police.
The draft also covers corporal punishment, and sets out the rights and responsibilities of students, parents, teachers and principals.
The proposed code was on the agenda at a poorly attended meeting last Monday night of the Bermuda National Parent Teacher Association. Association president Mrs. Marian Askia said afterwards there were plans for another meeting to discuss just the code.
"We would urge as many parents as possible to turn out,'' she said.
Mrs. Askia said Parent Teacher Associations had until the early part of May to present their comments on the planned code to the Education Department.
The National PTA would also be putting forward its comments.
Dr. Terceira has pledged another draft code will be produced after the comments from the associations had come in.
