Pepper spray used in city street incident

An unidentified man is pictured on the ground following a disturbance in Reid Street on Saturday afternoon.

Police used pepper spray to calm a 34-year-old Pembroke man in an altercation near the junction of Reid and Burnaby streets around 1 p.m. on Saturday.

According to officers, the incident stemmed from the arrest of a 30-year-old Pembroke man believed to be the 34-year-old's brother.

A Police spokesperson said the 34-year-old approached the officers as a result of the arrest, after which a struggle ensued between him and one of the officers.

Said the spokesperson: "As a result, the officer deployed a deterrent spray and the 34-year-old man was subdued and also arrested."

Both men were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment and released. The 34-year-old received minor facial injuries and the officer, minor injuries to his abdomen.

The 34-year-old was later bailed. Inquiries are ongoing.
